All of my other books so far, have a sentence in the preface that reads: 'You should be comfortable with using Terminal on macOS.' It always felt like cheating to not have a book that covered this. This is the book that helps you get comfortable with Terminal and shell. Working in the command line is a different way of working with computers than graphical user interfaces. In general, it is neither better nor worse. But it can be better or worse for certain tasks. For this book, I go with the assumption that you, the reader, are technically minded and curious, familiar with macOS, but not with Terminal and shell. You want to learn Terminal to learn more about the system and how it works. Aside from serving as an introduction, I also hope this book will serve well as a reference for more experienced users. While my experience and perspective is influenced by being a Mac systems administrator, this book is intended for developers and other power users, like statisticians and scientists, who want or need to use Terminal and shell as well. The book covers zsh, but also bash, on macOS versions up to macOS 11 Big Sur.
